SDG Certification for Community Institutions
Certification Framework
The certification system will combine:
- Capacity Building
Participating institutions will complete:
- SDG awareness and leadership training.
- Sustainability management workshops.
- Climate action and environmental stewardship modules.
- Human rights and social inclusion training.
- Monitoring, evaluation, and reporting workshops.
- Field visits and practical learning activities.
- Institutional Action Plans
Each institution will prepare a one-year SDG Action Plan including:
Baseline assessment.
- Priority SDG mapping.
- Quarterly targets and indicators.
- Stakeholder engagement strategy.
- Monitoring and reporting mechanisms.
- Implementation Requirements
Institutions must demonstrate:
- A minimum of 3 SDG-related actions quarterly.
- Activities across at least one of the five Agenda 2030 pillars: People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace, Partnership.
- Collection and verification of indicator data.
- Final sustainability reporting.
- Independent Assessment
An independent Certification Committee will evaluate institutions against predefined criteria.
Assessment will include:
- Documentation review.
- Site visits.
- Stakeholder interviews.
- Community surveys.
- Indicator performance assessment.
Certification Framework
Methodology
The certification framework is based on internationally recognized principles for SDG measurement and indicator selection.
- Relevant to the institution and SDG target.
- Measurable through quantitative or qualitative evidence.
- Performance-oriented rather than activity-oriented.
- Scientifically and methodologically robust.
- Comparable across institutions and reporting periods.
- Based on reliable and accessible data.
- Transparent and easily understood.
- Accepted by stakeholders.
- Aligned with existing standards and best practices.
Illustrative Indicators for Gurdwaras
SDG 1 – No Poverty
- Number of individuals receiving economic support through institutional programmes.
- Percentage of beneficiaries from vulnerable groups.
- Annual value of financial or in-kind assistance provided.
- Number of livelihood-support initiatives implemented.
SDG 2 – Zero Hunger
- Number of Langar meals served annually.
- Percentage of food sourced locally and sustainably.
- Number of food sharing programmes beyond the gurdwara.
- Reduction of food waste generated by Langar operations.
SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being
- Number of health awareness programmes organized.
- Number of participants in health camps and screenings.
- Availability of mental health and wellbeing support initiatives.
SDG 5 – Gender Equality
- Percentage of women in decision-making bodies.
- Number of gender equality awareness activities.
- Representation of women in leadership positions.
SDG 13 – Climate Action
- Annual greenhouse gas emissions estimate.
- Number of climate awareness activities.
- Trees planted or biodiversity initiatives supported.
Certification Committee
A multidisciplinary committee composed of:
- Sustainability experts from international organizations
- Scholars from renowned academic institutions
- Practitioners from civil society organisations
The committee will oversee standards, assessments, appeals, and certification decisions.
