The Board of Governors provides broad policy direction and long-term institutional stewardship. It helps ensure that SHRG’s work remains principled, credible, and responsive to the changing international landscape.

Manjit Singh Gill KC.

Manjit Singh Gill KC is one of the United Kingdom’s leading human rights lawyers. He has argued some of the most highly publicised and ground-breaking constitutional and human rights cases in the United Kingdom, with more than thirty appearances before the Supreme Court and its predecessor, the House of Lords, as well as cases before the Court of Justice of the European Union and the European Court of Human Rights.

He is also an Honorary Professor at the University of Birmingham, a Master of the Bench at Gray’s Inn, and Chair of the Expert Panel of the Strategic Legal Fund.

His notable cases (to name but a few) include:

• The leading case on the implementation of the ‘best interests of children’ principle. In which the Supreme Court unanimously held that the best interests of a child had to be considered and given paramount weight as part of the assessment of proportionality under Article 8 ECHR (the right to a private and family life); ZH (Tanzania), 2011
• The leading case on indefinite detention without trial; Belmarsh case, 2004
• The ‘Article 50/Brexit’ case; Gina Miller No 1, 2017
• Challenging the deportation of foreign criminals without an in-country appeal; Kiarie and Bydloss, 2017
• Establishing the minimum financial requirements for admission of foreign partners to the UK, Article 8 ECHR; MM (Lebanon) 2017
• Highlighting the negative effects that the deportation of foreign criminals can have on their children; KO (Nigeria), 2018
• Establishing the definition of ‘family members’ for EU law purposes with reference to children in an Islamic kafala context; SM (Algeria), 2019, Court of Justice of the European Union
• The rectification of historic injustices in English public law; R(S) v Secretary of State 2007
• Several of the UK’s leading cases on rectifying wrongs caused by denial of nationality to former categories of British nationals; NH (India), 2007 AND AP (India) 2015
• The first case on indefinite house arrest without a criminal trial and/or the first case regarding control orders to reach the House of Lords. Successful challenged under the Prevention of Terrorism Act 2005; JJ and others, 2006
• Fighting against the torture and ill-treatment by States of suspected terrorists; A v Secretary of State 2004
• Fighting for citizens to be able to conscientiously object to military services; Krotov, 2004

Professor Arvind-Pal Singh Mandair.

Professor Arvind-Pal Singh Mandair is a distinguished scholar of Sikh studies, philosophy, and cross-cultural thought. He holds a BSc and PhD in Chemistry from Aston University, and an MA and PhD in Philosophy from the University of Warwick.

After specialising in Sikh and South Asian studies and cross-cultural philosophy, he began his teaching career in the humanities at Coventry University before taking up a post at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, as a Research Fellow. In 2001, he became Assistant Professor of Religion and the first holder of the S.K.K. Bindra Chair in Sikh Studies at Hofstra University in New York. After five years in New York, he served two consecutive terms as the S.B.S.C. Endowed Chair in Sikh Studies at the University of Michigan. He has worked with the Sikh Human Rights Group for almost thirty years.

• Arvind’s earlier book publications include Religion and the Specter of the West: Sikhism, India, Postcoloniality and the Politics of Translation (Columbia University Press, 2009); Sikhism: A Guide For the Perplexed (Bloomsbury 2013); Secularism and Religion-Making (with Markus Dressler, Oxford 2011); Teachings of the Sikh Gurus (with Christopher Shackle, Routledge 2005).
• Arvind is the Editor of Sikhism: Vol. 8 of the Encyclopedia of Indian Religions
• Arvind Mandair is the founding editor of the Routledge journal Sikh Formations: Religion, Culture and Theory and the co-editor of two new book series Routledge Critical Sikh Studies., and Routledge Studies in Religion and Translation. He also serves on the editorial board of journals such as Culture and Religion, and Religions of South Asia. His forthcoming books include: Spiritual Warriors: Violence and Non-Violence in Sikhism (for Cambridge University Press), and Geophilosophical Encounters: Decolonial Dialogues Between Sikh and Deleuzian Thought (Edinburgh University Press, under review); and Sikh Philosophy (Bloomsbury).

Dr Darryl Macer.

Dr Darryl Macer is President and co-founder, in 2013, of the American University of Sovereign Nations, and Professor of Bioethics and Biomedicine. Dr Macer is a world renowned scholar who served from 2004 until early 2013 as the UNESCO Regional Adviser for Social and Human Sciences in Asia and the Pacific.

Professor Macer is credited with over three hundred academic publications. He has served as a Professor at the University of Tsukuba, Tsukuba Science City from 1990 to 2005, and an Affiliated Professor at the University of Kumamoto, Japan; United Nations University.

He is also the Founding Director, of the Eubios Ethics Institute, New Zealand; Thailand and Japan, since 1990. For more information please visit:

Born in 1962 in Christchurch, New Zealand, he has a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Biochemistry from Lincoln College, University of Canterbury, 1983. He also obtained a PhD in Biochemistry at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Trinity College, University of Cambridge, UK, in 1987; and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Philosophy from Kumamoto University, Japan in 2009.
He has since worked in the UK, New Zealand, Italy, Japan, Thailand and the USA and is a member of numerous international bioethics committees.
