He is Director of the DSI-NRF Centre in Indigenous Knowledge Systems at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban, South Africa. Before this, he coordinated the IKS Teaching and Research Programme at North-West University, coordinated the NEPAD Agency IKS Regional Node for Southern Africa, and served as Patron of the African Young Scientists Initiative on Climate Change and IKS, which helped organise the first International Student Conference on IKS and Climate Change and the COP17 Round Table Discussions in Durban.

His publications include African Indigenous Knowledge Systems in Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation(with Y. Seleti, 2014), Disarticulation and Poor Incentive Programmes in African Economies: The Case of the Sisal Industry in Tanzania (1989), Peoples Participation Programmes and the Dilemma of Rural Leadership in Tanzania (1989), Problems of Regional Development in Tanzania: A Case Study of the Tanga Region (1985), and Demand for Major Fruit Tree Seedlings by Village Farms and Farmers in the Lowland Areas of the Tanga Region (1986).
